We seek to design, construct, and deploy renewable energy technologies for rapid deployment in disaster-relief scenarios.  For Haiti, we plan to construct a wind turbine that deploys from within a 40 foot shipping container and extends to a height of 60 feet.  It is an implementation of the concept designed by ATOPIA Research.  The 3 kW electricity production would sufficiently power a clinic, small hospital, or school.  The vertical axis design of the rotor accommodated winds from all directions.  With the deployment of the turbine, we will set up a meteorological measurement station to characterize wind resources at the location and analyze the variability of energy production from the turbine under various meteorological conditions.  We will also conduct fine-resolution atmospheric simulations, using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model to map the wind resources and potential wind-turbine placement sites around Haiti.
